Reese, and Ken “Bowlegged” Stance. Together, they have turned their family’s love for food, music, and community into a culinary destination that locals and visitors alike can call home.

Carlos Stance, a lifelong San Diegan, grew up immersed in the local culture. With a love for sports, music, and authentic Southern flavors, he spent over 40 years in the sales and marketing field before realizing his dream of bringing Texas-style BBQ to his hometown. Driven by a passion to create spaces where people connect, Carlos saw Bowlegged BBQ as a place where the community could gather, celebrate, and savor something special. His enthusiasm, commitment to quality, and San Diego pride have helped shape Bowlegged BBQ into more than just a barbecue joint; it’s a welcoming, family-run gem in the heart of the city.

The flavor behind the operation, however, comes from none other than Maria J. Reese. A talented chef and creative cuisine connoisseur, Maria’s culinary skills elevate every dish served at Bowlegged BBQ. After more than two decades as a teacher in the San Diego Education System, Maria’s nurturing spirit now finds its outlet in her food. Her dedication to putting a smile on every face has made Bowlegged BBQ’s menu not just mouth-watering but unforgettable, with signature dishes like her famous cornbread winning over every guest. For Maria, cooking isn’t just a job—it’s a way to share love, warmth, and joy with the community she treasures.

And then there’s Ken “Bowlegged” Stance, the sibling whose childhood nickname is now synonymous with BBQ done right in San Diego. Known for his infectious cheer and laid-back demeanor, Ken is the visionary who spices things up, both in the kitchen and in life. With a rich background in creative and marketing ventures spanning four decades, he knows how to build and sustain a brand that resonates. Ken’s entrepreneurial spirit and sense of adventure have helped Bowlegged BBQ stand out in a city brimming with food culture. When he’s not fine-tuning the latest recipe or brainstorming the next big idea, Ken is likely enjoying live music, supporting the arts, or cheering alongside fans at a game.
